Tens of thousands of health and care service providers in Derby and Derbyshire are enhancing the quality of their conversations, especially with those facing health inequalities, thanks to a new eLearning package.

An innovative eLearning programme is available to anyone in the health and care sector in Derbyshire, whether clinical staff or support service providers. It equips them with skills to approach conversations with care and respond positively, encouraging people to open up when seeking support.

Participants explore interactive scenarios that highlight barriers faced by those experiencing health inequalities. The programme coaches them on how to have positive conversations that can lead to behaviour change. Initially, the eLearning programme is part of the induction for new staff across the 12 main health and care organisations in the county. It will then be extended to all people working in hospitals, primary and community care, local authorities, and charities in Derby and Derbyshire.

The training, developed by Joined Up Care Derbyshire ICS and Me Learning, features a 60-minute foundation programme on Quality Conversations, divided into three bite-sized modules with highly interactive elements. It includes scenarios for both clinical and frontline support jobs, such as receptionists, cleaners, gardeners, and estates staff, recognising their crucial role in interacting with service users.

Scenarios and imagery specific to Derbyshire make the training relevant for learners. They explore the impact of different responses to those experiencing health inequalities, such as:

  • A single mother with limited access to transport who misses GP appointments.
  • A refugee with limited English who doesn’t understand the system.
  • An LGBTQ woman hesitant to open up due to lifelong prejudice during a Care Assessment.

“We are proud to have created such an interactive and meaningful eLearning resource with Me Learning. We feel that we have brought the impact of health inequalities to life, and shared skills for learners to know how to improve conversations skills and apply a personalised approach to their roles.

“The Me Learning team have been professional and brought a wealth of expertise to make the final product credible and engaging. They have been a pleasure to work with and flexible when we needed them to be, but able to keep to expected time frames. The technical support team have also been great, and I would be happy to recommend them for similar work.”
